Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup espresso shots or strong black coffee
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons powdered sugar optional, adjust to taste
  • 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream chilled
  • Cocoa powder or grated chocolate for garnish

Method

  1. Pour the espresso or strong black coffee into your serving cup. If using powdered sugar, add it now and stir until completely dissolved.
  2. In a chilled medium bowl, whip the heavy cream using an electric mixer or a whisk until stiff peaks form. For a sweeter cream, add a little powdered sugar while whipping.
  3. Transfer the whipped cream to a piping bag fitted with a star tip. Pipe generous swirls over the coffee, aiming for a 1:1 ratio of cream to coffee. Adjust the amount to your preference.
  4. Dust the top with cocoa powder or shaved chocolate, if desired, and serve immediately.

Notes

For best results, use very cold cream and a chilled bowl. If you don't have a piping bag, spoon the cream on top. Make it ahead by whipping the cream and storing it in the fridge for up to 2 hours. Common mistake: over-whipping cream can turn it into butter. Serve with a spoon to enjoy the cream and coffee together. For a dairy-free version, use coconut cream whipped with a little sugar.
